- Keon Young Shim (Software Engineering) Receives an Award from the President of SKKU in 11th TOPCIT Periodic Evaluation Keon Young Shim (Software Engineering) received an award from the president of SKKU in 11th TOPCIT periodic evaluation. TOPCIT is hosted by Ministry of Science and ICT and Institute for Information and Communications Technology Promotion. Congratulations to the awardee! College of Software would like to welcome more students to attend and excel in TOPCIT. TOPCIT stands for Test of Practical Competency in ICT. IT specialists and software developers can take TOPCIT to evaluate their competency upon performing relevant work in the field. In SKKU, a score with level of 3 and above can be accepted as an acquisition of 창의품. Moreover, it can be reflected in assessment and selection when applying for companies and national service. SW-centered universities support the registration fee. 12th TOPCIT evaluation will be held in October 19. College of Software looks forward to have more students to show their interest

- Seung Hyun Kim, a Master’s degree student from Professor Jong Wuk Lee’s Research Lab, Publishes a Paper in WWW Seung Hyun Kim, a Mater’s degree student from Professor Jong Wuk Lee’s research lab published a paper on “Dual Neural Personalized Ranking” in International Conference on World Wide Web (WWW) 2019. WWW is one of the top conferences that has ever existed in data mining. In his paper, improvement of Bayesian Personalized Ranking model was demonstrated by applying an algorithm that uses pair-wise preference between user and item. The algorithm distinguished items into preferred and non-preferred based on the individual users. This improvement solved data scarcity problem by allowing it to learn through representation of the users and items in embedding space.

- Mi Jin An, a combined master and doctorate student from Professor Sang Won Lee’s research lab, gets awarded in F8 Hackathon hosted by Facebook Mi Jin An, a combined master and doctorate student from Professor Sang Won Lee’s research lab, participated in F8 Hackathon, which was hosted by Facebook. The hackathon involved four categories out of SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) from United Nations. Mi Jin’s team, Code Canary, developed a chat-bot to allow potential learners, living in underprivileged conditions such as lack of laptops and weak data environment, to learn programming through simple coding and display of result in the chatroom. The aim of the prototype was to lower the barrier to entry of programming learning regardless of educational environment and places. As a result, the team made it through the final with seven other teams. Five teams were awarded and Code Canary received the best award in SDG 4 (Education) section.

- Professor Woo Simon’s Research Lab Publishes a Paper in 25th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining A paper from Professor Woo and his DASH (Data-driven AI Security HCI http://dash.skku.edu/) research lab got accepted into one of the top conference in CS machine learning/ data mining, 25th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining. KDD is a world-class level of conference in data mining and application of machine learning. Professor Woo participated as a corresponding author in the research on anomaly detection of satellites, that has been under investigation by SUNY Korea and Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The research applies Multivariate Convolutional LSTM with Mixtures of Probabilistic PCA to detect the anomaly more effectively. Additionally, the fact that the machine learning technology was applied to the actual satellite control system is considered meaningful.
