5G-enabled Smart Factory (5GFACTORY 2020)

❍ The Third International Workshop on 5G-enabled Smart Factory (5GFACTORY 2020). https://smartfactory.skku.edu/smartfactory/community/mobispc2020.jsp

❍ Co-Located with the 17th International Conference on Mobile Systems and Pervasive Computing August 9-12, 2020, Leuven, Belgium. http://cs-conferences.acadiau.ca/mobispc-20/

Mobile Systems and Pervasive Computing (MobiSPC) have evolved into an active area of research and development. This is due to the tremendous advances in a broad spectrum of technologies and topics, including wireless networking, mobile and distributed computing, sensor systems, RFID technology, and the ubiquitous mobile phone. MobiSPC-2020 solicits papers that focus on the theory, systems, practices and challenges of providing users with a successful mobile or wireless experience. This includes how mobile computing changes how people pervasively use their computers, computing resources and applications, as well the systems, services and technologies enabling those applications.

MobiSPC-2020 will provide a leading-edge, scholarly forum for researchers, engineers, and students alike to share their state-of-the-art research and developmental work in the broad areas of pervasive computing and mobile systems.

Overview

The 2020 marks the starting year for the fifth-generation (5G) network deployment. However, the way is still long to have a fully operational network that meets the predefined KPIs for sliced services and multigigabits downloading speeds. Also, the mechanisms for efficient selection of service-based architectures have not evolved yet to adopt the new concepts of logic networking and dynamic network slicing. There is also a need to continue developing spectrum extensions techniques for new radio (NR), multi-connectivity schemes, orchestrated operations driven by network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN), etc.

Digital manufacturing and cyber-physical systems are considered key elements of the definition and implementation of Industry 4.0. Technological advancements in the ability to collect, transfer and analyze vast amounts of data very rapidly are at the core of this trend. Closely related, smart factory is a concept that aims at integrating these new technologies to rapidly adapt and respond to changes in the markets'demands for high-quality products. In practice, smart factories lie at the core of both, Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. The digitalisation is affecting production and is expected to enable efficient lot size one and customer tailored production and/or support the servitization of the business, while minimising environmental footprints and overall costs.

Fog and Edge Computing paradigm is regarded as capable of satisfying the resource requirements for the emerging mobile applications such as virtual and augmented reality, vehicular networks, and IoT applications. Such implementations will exploit further the capabilities of Mobile Edge Comping (MEC), wireless virtualization, and Software Defined Systems or Networks (SDNs) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) among others. Due to the non-linearity of the Quality-of-Experience (QoE) model, the resource manipulation with the solution provided within the context of SDN for MEC devices should be solved concurrently so that the associated performance can be assessed and evaluated. The inclusion of MEC, SDN, and NFV and its possible support for 5G systems are emerging as one of the highly active research areas with a large room for improvements. In addition, one important aspect of great importance is the continuously increasing processing, caching and storage capabilities required by emerging applications such as IoT and virtual reality. The purpose of this special issue is to provide the academic and industrial communities an excellent venue covering all aspects of current work on Fog Computing, Edge Computing and with the long-term architecture that will encompass the differently supported middleware(s).
